Canteen Knockout
Broken Down Town
Canteen Knockout drives upon a Indie Country/Folk sound but keeping in touch with a Canadian Touch.
Right from the start the song tells the tale of the song “Whiskey Drains The Pain”. The 70’s Rock guitar styling’s simply takes this album astride. The blend of Genres which Canteen Knockout Town has recorded and placed on Broken Down Town may have been a risky move for some but I can no place any faults about their choosing. What I found interesting the most with the blending of the genres was the Tempo with each song. “Knife In My Side” is a easy going slow tempo song which brings you back into a dimly lit smoke filled bar, as you drink your problems away( but still leaves you tapping you foot along with the song).
“Louisiana” is one of the highlights of the album for me. As I listen the song more and more I find myself enjoying the song a little bit more. As the song begins I get a sense of the Eagles drifting out of the guitars and drums. As I dug deeper and deeper into the song I found myself discovering a hint of Blue Rodeo and Gordon Lightfoot through Andre’s vocals. “Louisiana” combines every all the sounds that is spread throughout the album and combined into one song. The addition of the backup harmonies was also a nice additive to the song.
“Back In The Sun” is a catchy little number. If you are a fan of Cuff The Duke then you will enjoy the opening riff. Andre’s raspy vocals really helps set this song aside for me. The only problem I found in this song is the length, finishing just past two minutes and thirty seconds. This is one of those songs that I wish was around four minutes at least in length.
Lastly I cannot forget to mention the Gordon Lightfoot cover “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald”. This is the first time that I have heard someone cover Mr. Lightfoot before. So not surprisingly I was a little skeptical at first listen, Canteen Knockout couldn’t have done a better job at covering this song.
