Last night Kasey, Beautiful Inferno and Doll rocked the sh*t and damaged a few ear drums at the Mansion.
Kasey opened up the night with a true unplugged set. When I say this I mean a real unplugged set, the soundman was running late so Kasey jumped up on the staged and played unplugged. Kasey did covers with his own personal twist added to them. He ranged from Rock to Blues to Country. One of my favourite songs which he did was his rendition of Folsom Prison Blues, even though it is kind of expected to add Kingston instead of Folsom but it is still nice to hear it. This was the first time that I have ever heard Jerry Lee Lewis played on acoustic guitar before. I was kind of annoyed with people talking throughout the set however, Because Kasey was unplugged it was difficult enough to hear him and with people talking it made it even more difficult. With about three songs left David Currie joined Kasey onstage and played Harmonica. Kasey finished out his set with an original tune.
I was interested how Beautiful Inferno would sound live, after listening to their album. I have always found that there is the album version of the songs and then the live version. By the time Beautiful Inferno took to the stage a few more people had trickled in. By the end of the first song it was time to put the ear plugs in, because they were starting to get louder and louder. The only bad part about their set was the constant talking between the lead singer (Mike Brown) and bassist (Mike cooper after each song. There were probably about three minutes wasted between each song with their joking around. One of the details about their set which I enjoyed the most was Mike’s Vocals, they sounded better live then they did on the album. I noticed that he changed the sound of the song a little bit compared to the album. Also I have to mention the timing of the band together as a whole. I was hoping to get to hear a couple more songs than I did, but with two more bands to go their set was cut short a little bit.
(Fucking Doll), (The Dolls), (The Doll Band) Doll hit the stage pretty quickly. To start their set off Christina came out Screaming. I am still amazed how much of a scream that Christina can blare out. This was the same song which they used the last time which I saw them play at Barnone. This concert was a long time coming for me, I have been waiting to hear Doll play since I saw them last at Barnone. The stage couldn’t contain Christina for very long it only took one song before she jumped off the stage and played in front of the laid-back audience. Now to understand all the names at the beginning these are all the names that Doll has been called over the years. My favourite name out of the list is Fucking Doll, it was probably yelled out a dozen or so times throughout the night. For a Grunge band their timing was also top notch, especially between Nick and Christina. Compared to the last show I noticed that Nick came out from behind his drums more and made more of an appearance. I though that Beautiful Inferno was loud but I’m pretty sure that the dial got turned up a little bit more when Doll took to the stage, because it felt as Pete’s guitar was ripping right through my ear plugs, But that is how Doll is meant to be heard. Doll went through a couple of my favourite songs during their set which was a little shorter than I had hoped it was going to be. Hopefully they come back to Kingston again soon, because they put on one hell of a show.
