Erica Viegas Where My Heart Goes is a highly vocal and acoustic driven album.
With an album that has only five songs Erica manages to cover a vast variety of Genres. Erica’s vocals have been compared to that of Jewel and Chantal Kreviazuk just to name a couple, which I do believe is a really good example of Erica’s vocals and also her guitar playing as well.
Having an album which touches so many different genres to me Erica may still searching for her own specific sound or she enjoys not sticking to one specific sound. But I also like an album where each song doesn’t sound the same and leaves you wondering what each song is going to sound like as you listen to the album for the first time.
One of my favourite aspects about Where My Heart Goes, is the vocals. Erica receives a 10/10 for her vocals on Where My Heart Goes. If the vocals where not outstanding as they are I believe the album would have a major faultier on its hands. What I also like about the vocals is how they blend in with the music and not overpower the instrumental aspect of the songs, as I find someone like Mariah Carey does. Erica blends her vocals really well with each song, for example in the song “Thank You” the guitar and drums are a little softer and Erica adjusts her vocals to match.
Where My Heart Goes opens up with a crisp and clean finger picking acoustic guitar playing. Erica wastes no time in showing off her vocals, with a nice soft voice. The same finger picking pattern follows throughout the song only changing around a couple of times. The song does picks up the tempo and meaning after a couple of verses. This is the song where the Jewel reference can really be pulled from especially from the guitar and the vocals.
I would have preferred to hear the entire song the way it was at the start of the song instead of the drums kicking in with the symbols, but I would keep the keys that make an appearance in the song. But the way the song is played is highly acceptable. I would like to hear the song in a stripped down version as well.
My favourite song off of Where My Heart Goes is the title track of the album. This track is one of songs that has more of a country feel to and also has the addition of a pop sound as well.. The song is also one of the more upbeat songs on the album as well. As every song on the album the vocals are outstanding. Even when Erica hit’s her higher notes she still keeps the softness within the vocals as well. The addition of the fiddle in the song was a nice touch as well, it really fills the void that is left between a couple of verses in the song.
