Helcion is a Canadian band that is based out of Summerland, British Columbia. This is Helcions Self Titled debut album. Their sound can be called experimental melodic rock. The band is comprised of three members which includes the leading lady Jessica Toorenburgh on Bass guitar and Lead Vocals, Richard Madsen who is the progressive Electric Guitarist, and behind the Drum Sticks there is Corey Ferguson. Helcion influences include such bands as Tool, System Of A Down, Nirvana, Queense Of The Stonage, and Ween just to name a few.
The album has eight tracks and clocks in at just over 30 minutes. The song titles are
1. The Swim
2. Spaces
3. Better Living Through The Fallibility Of Others
4. One Hour Left
5. Amused
6. The Sorrow Of The Saint
7. The Masquerade
8. The Waiting Gallery
The First Track which is called “The Swim” is a slow tempo string picking song. Jessica’s voice follows the speed of the guitar and is a notch or two lower than the guitar. Also her voice isn’t the usual raspy deep rocker chick sound at all. I find that it is a nice change because most Women fronted bands. Amy Lees voice from Evanescence but with a bit more rock attitude would best describe Jessica’s voice. This song was one of the main factors when I tried to comprise the best description of their sound.
“One Hour Left” which is track number four caught my attention when I first heard the song play. The guitar solo is what caught my attention. The Offspring - Smash era and Bush X – Machine Head came straight into my mind when I first heard the starting of the song. The song stays at the same speed throughout the duration of the song. While listening to the song you can really dig into the song because of the detached guitar riffs that Richard plays throughout the song.
Track six “The Sorrow Of The Saint” is the heaviest song on the album. The song can probably fit into a Metal or Heavy Rock genre. This is where the Tool and System Of A Down influence comes into play. Again this is anther song in which Jessica’s voice almost gets hidden from the instruments.
