Helcion - Helcion II

Helcion is back with a vengeance, with the release of their brand new sophomore album Helcion II. After listening to the very first song on this album my first impression of this album is Helcions’ experience and inwardness were immediately exposed. This album is a definite improvement in Helcion, in their overall sound and their image as a whole. With the release of this album this proves to all doubters if there were any that Helcion is creating great Alternative, Progressive Rock songs for a reason and they are here to stay.

Helcion is made up of three members, The Lead singer and Bass Player Jessica Toorenburgh, Corey Feguson on the Skins and Keys, and Richard Madsen on Lead Guitar.

Helcion II contains five original tracks Bill Of Goods, Come Ons, Wants & Needs, The Parting, The Sun Sets For No One.

The second “Bill of Goods” starts you can tell right away that your ears are in for a treat. This is the music that should be played on the radio and not the weak music that seems to be pushed onto us. The sound of the track stays true to Helcion’s distinct sound, there is just the perfect sense of darkness in the tone of their instruments. There is a slight hint of Godsmack that comes across to me in Richard’s guitar. Jessica’s vocals provides the strength that the lyrics need to make the song as strong as the lyrics are written.

“Wants & Needs” is almost an experimental song for Helcion. The addition of the Keyboards in the track adds a deeper and darker sound. I find with the addition of the Keys Helcion brings a “Gothic” sound to their music. This song really stands out among the other songs on the album as it doesn’t sound like any of the other songs on the album. The Tempo of the instruments is much faster then the Tempo of the Vocals for most of the song. I also like how the backup vocals play out in the background, with the background vocals it helps push the “gothic” feeling in the song. A small linear note about the song is the song is the longest song on the album clocking at 6 minutes and thirty eight seconds.

My favourite track off the album is the second song on the album which is entitled “Come Ons”. If I had to pick a single off of the album this would be the song that I would choose. The way Jessica opens up the song with her vocals in the first line of the song only intrigues your ears. About three quarters of the way through the song I like how there is a “Surge of Power” of the instruments. The Drums and the Guitars really work well together in this song, I find one of the key factors that they work so well together is because the Guitar for the most of the song pretty much plays and stays with the same tempo as the Drums. Also the vocals are really well done especially for a Rock song you can always understand what Jessica is singing.
