Manuela creates a Pop/Soulful atmosphere as you listen to her A Different Kind Of Fire.
What really works for me with this album is the upbeat tempo that is created throughout the album.
My favourite song on the album is the third song called “Circling Numbers”. The song has a simple sound that is created by the piano playing, and soulful soft vocals. Throughout the album you will find yourself enjoying Manuela’s vocals more and more. What I like the most out of the vocals in “Circling Numbers” is the softness of the vocals, and how they render around the same mellow softness and do not vary to higher tones or to lower tones at all throughout the song. A nice touch that I feel which is added to the song is the electric guitar near the ending of the song, it is not an entirely big addition to the song but I found it added bit more texture to the song. One artist that you could easily curve your focus to for a reference would be Alicia Keys as you listen to the piano playing and vocals in the song.
If you read Manuela’s bio which can be found here http://www.myspace.com/themanuela. You will read that she has lived in many different places in such a short period of time, but what is interesting is the fact that you can tell that there are influences written throughout her songs which incorporate the places that she has lived.
“Things you Should Know” is the opening song on the album. This song was a good choice to open the album up with because the song pretty much lays down the theme of the album. What I liked the most about song was the upbeat acoustic guitar entrance into the song. I think the song would have been lost if it was not for the upbeat full chord playing. The organ was also a nice touch to the song, what I like about the organ is how it is blended in with the song and doesn’t overshadow any of the other instruments in the song. The approach with the vocals were recorded and placed on the song sounded great, usually I am not a fan of having the vocals stronger and overpower the instruments but because Manuela has a wonderful voice this works incredibly in her favour.
