If you are looking for an album that is full of great classic/new sounding guitar riffs with vocals to match, look no further Matt Hughes delivers what you are looking for.
Matt is on the brink of releasing his Self-Titled E.P that contains six songs. The first song off the album is called “Next Big Thing”. If the right person hears this song Matt will be the next big thing. Right from the start as many great rock songs start the opening riff just brings you right off your seat. The song mixes nineties style metal with new Rock style mixed together. The vocals in the track only help raise the bar in this song. If I had to name drop a couple of bands to compare the vocals with I would put my money on Krokus, with a bit of Lillian Axe, but a bit stronger vocals than Krokus. All of the instruments seem to have the perfect timing and work out perfectly for the song. I also like how the vocals were whispered three quarters of the way through the song; to me it adds character to the song.
“Can’t Bring Me Down” is the second song off the album. The bass line is real heavy in this track, I had to turn down my Sub for this song because it pretty much drowned out the song at the start. The starting Riff for the song is a older Metallica sounding Riff. The vocals in the track are on the same line as the first song is. This song is a guitar soloists dream because it is full of solos. The best parts about the solos are they sound great and they fit the song. What I find happens with a lot of guitar solos they don’t fit in with the song. The lyrics are what really stand out to me, they are strongly written.
“You can’t bring me down, to the ground
You can’t bring me down, it doesn’t matter
You can’t Bring my down, no matter how hard you try
You can’t bring me down, it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter!
“The Other Light Shines” shows the softer side of Matt. The intro to the song starts off with a slower guitar picking style compared to the rest of the tracks. The vocals also become a bit softer in this track and they stay around the same tempo and in some parts of the song almost get drowned out because of the drums and guitars. I think I might have liked the song more if the guitars stayed the same all they way through as they were at the start of the song.
“Keep My Faith” picks up the tempo of the album again and starts off with a catchy heavy riff. The backing vocals in the song fit in to the song really well, after hearing the backing vocals in the song I tend to listen more to catch the vocals. The lead vocals also seem to be a bit louder and stronger in this track then the other songs on the album. There is also a awesome guitar solo about halfway through the song. Out of all the songs I like the opening riff to this song the most. I also like the transition from the starting guitar riff to the main guitar lines in the song. The lyrics to the song like most of the songs on the album are written about life lessons.
“Despite the lessons learned I keep my faith
I know the lesson’s only right
Despite the lessons learned I keep my faith, Yeah!”
