Don’t get fooled by the band’s name The Burning Hell is everything that you do not expect to hear.
Going from cabaret styling to solo monotone acoustic songs The Burning Hell Flux Capacitor really balances a fine line throughout the duration of the album. The monotone vocals were a little hard for me to get over at first but I found I had to listen to the album and each song a few times before I began to understand each song. To me the vocals really stood out throughout most of the songs leaving me to question the compatibility of the vocals and instruments in each song.
The album opens up with a Quirky little number called “My name is Mathias”. I have to say it has been awhile since I have listened to anything similar to this album. I had trouble deciding at first which I should pay more attention to being the lyrics or the instrumental aspect of the song. I found myself at first listening to the lyrics more and having a good laugh a few times throughout the song. About my fifth time through the song and in a row I began to listen to the instruments more. The intro to the song is kept simple with an acoustic guitar playing out slightly, which does make way and sets up for the horn sections in the song. While having such a wide variety of instruments I was surprised by how well they blended together so nicely. If I had to choose which was my favourite area or aspect with the instruments were I would have to it is the blending of the string and horn sections closer to the end of the song.
A couple songs down the list I am going to jump onto the song “Report Car”. the vocals really stood out to me in this song. I would like to narrow it down a little but I would probably say it the was similarities to Gordon Lightfoot which I heard right away which brought me into the song. The song starts off quiet with a simple easy sounding acoustic guitar string picking but quickly gains a little momentum and them peaks off where it stays for duration of the song. The easy sounding monotone vocals blend really well with the string picking. While listening to the lyrics this song became (if true) a real quick personal look into his life.
“Pirates” takes a bigger turn into a cabaret style of song and takes us deeper into The Burning Hell genre bending sound. Just as the opening song its his lyrical stlying which brings me into listening to each song a few times before I fully understand the song. There is quite a little mixture of different genres mixed in with the song. Again the monotone vocals carry out over top of all the instruments in the song. Out of all the songs this would be one of the few which I would like to see play live if I ever get the chance.
