The Elwins
Self Titled EP
The Self Titled Ep by The Elwins borders along a few different genres throughout the five songs which includes Indie Pop/Rock, and Retro.
The album opens up with the song “Dear, Oh My”. Right away I got a Micheal Buble feel out of the song by the way the vocals and guitars are performed at the beginning of the song. The upbeat sound and the tempo moves around throughout the song but without changing the sound of the song.
It isn’t very often where the sound of a band relies on the Bass Guitar. I found the Bass one of the key factors which creates the upbeat feel and sound of the album. During the song “Time To Kill Time” the Bass is what makes the song a success for me. Even though the riff of the Bass is a simplistic one it still creates a wave of sound which carries the song in between a couple of verses. Throughout the song the bass is hidden behind the drums and lead guitars but does shine through at a few key points in the song. I also found that it changes the tone to the song as well within a couple of verses.
“Larry Pastorus” is the quirkiest song off of the album. What was a surprise to me was the catchy opening hook, a 60’s pop song is the best which I can come up with to compare the hook to. This song to me is on of the more amusing songs which I have heard in awhile. Usually a song as this song sound as if it would be a live track only but I give the guys kudos for adding this song to the album, it really helps to define the band. another little amusing tidbit which they added to the song was the whistling which sounds as if it belongs to the song and would be missed if it was taken out.
The five song that are on the album are.
Dear,Oh My
Kristy May
Time To Kill Time
Larry Pastorus
